Music Festival in Nature
Everyone is fully relaxed, having free flow energy and conversations. These were only the first few impressions as dancers stepped into the icy cold waters abutting the stages with impeccable sound systems.
One of the more stronger identifiers, is that people are barely on their phones. Only a few phones pop up to capture each magical musical moment. It made a huge difference in the vibe - and there was no official 'no phone' policy. It just happened naturally.
As you walk through the entrance path, you can view a sea of people in various Butik festival fashion, something that is both thrilling and striking. There is something about festival fashion that makes you take in the surroundings and be in the moment. An instant hit of energy.
In the Alps of Slovenia, within 2 hours of Ljubljana, 3.5 hours of Zagreb, and adjacent to the Italian border, this music festival is located in the midst of the country's most beautiful scenery.
Throughout the year, Slovenia tourism in Tolmin offers extreme sports such as paragliding, white water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and an electronic music festival is no exception. All of them are characterized by physical endurance, adrenaline rushes, escapism, freedom, and sensory stimulation.
With this in mind, Butik Festival offers other activities aside from the music programming such as yoga classes, massage workshops, and ecstatic dancing. Calling all active techno tourists, there are many things to do at Butik Festival.
With the majority of attendees coming from Germany (25%), next to them are those from the Netherlands (13%), Austria (12%), Slovenia (11%), France (10%), United Kingdom (8%), and Italy (4%). In total there are people from 50 different countries. With a capacity limit of 3,000 people, this is quite diverse for any festival. With this being their 5th edition, they have already attracted the international circuit.
Butik Festival 2024 highlights
Let's start with the most important detail of any music festival: sound systems. The Butik Festival stages use 3 different sound systems: Void, d&b, and Dynamic Audio Device (DAD). This was a huge part of the experience for festival-goers because they were tuned like butter.
Another impressive attribute of Butik is that there is a strong Slovenian artist representation and homegrown effort. The co-founders, Romina Gerbec and Gasper Sovdat, live in Tolmin and embarked on doing a music festival in their own town. They were very proud and excited to show us Slovenian artists to discover. In any case, this method is a steadfast approach to grow the Slovenian music scene by creating an eco system of both local and international interest.
The Butik Festival lineup consists of recognizable names such as Octo Octa b2b Eris Drew, Quest b2b Marie Montexier, Ryan Elliott, tINI, Sedef Adasi, Samuel Deep, and Evan Baggs.
The timetable was unique because some of the most recognizable names had early set times, which attracted a large crowd in the beginning. Then, they sandwich a not so recognizable name in between, so people would discover music from new artists. Some of those artists were Slovenian DJs such as Lara b2b Virgilio, Lottie b2b Lerro, Alex Ranerro, and Teo.
This is one of the most scenic music festivals since it is set in impeccable nature. The location is so impressionable on your senses that it resets your whole experience and approach to music festivals in general. With such a powerful force of nature, we all left extremely impressed by this new approach to dance music culture.
Let's talk fashion. Since this is a camping festival, people are dressed for comfort but you will also find some fun prints and eclectic mash ups. Just like most festivals you get a varied amount of unique costumes, and at Butik, fashion becomes more than just clothing; it's a celebration of individuality and a way for participants to express their connection to the music and environment.
What we love about the organizers, is that they ask for feedback and want to hear what people are experiencing as a way to improve. Since this was their best year yet, it seems that their questions about improving went to good use.
Sustainability is a major factor to their approach as they are an eco-friendly festival. They practice using reusable cups and biodegradable packaging for their bars and food vendors. To eliminate cups laying around and going into the river, there is a cup deposit system to encourage people to return their cups to the bar. Additionally, there is drinkable water from taps coming directly from the mountains!
